Meditation

Meditation is a mind and body process that uses concentration or reflection to relax the body and calm the mind in order to create a sense of well being.

Self-directed meditation is done by selecting a quiet place free from noise and distraction, sitting or resting quietly with eyes closed (usually on a floor), and trying to achieve a feeling of peace through meditation.  By concentrating on and listening to deep breathing, a pleasant thought or chanting a relaxed yet alert state can be attained through meditation.

It is claimed that regular meditation can increase longevity and quality of life; and reduce many ill health symtoms brought on by stress. Practitioners also claim meditation improves mood, health, and enhances fertility.

There are various types of meditation - prayer is probably the best known, but there is also TM (Transcendental Meditation), mindfulness meditation, and from the Eastern tradition, Zen meditation, Buddhist meditation, and Taoist meditation.
